Aaron Amerling

I find the shift before it's obvious, then build the brand, product or team that meets it. At GoFundMe that meant advising the two founders when it was still three people around a table and called Create-A-Fund. At GreatCall it meant helping push a telecom company into mobile health. At Etna it meant standing up answer engine optimization before most agencies had a name for it.

Most recently I was Chief Marketing Officer at Etna Interactive, where I led a 60-person organization spanning paid, owned, earned, strategy and client services. Before that, as VP of Strategy at The Lemonade Agency, I built marketing strategy for clients including Disney, Meta, Square Enix, Ubisoft, Dior and DirecTV. Earlier I managed a £40M+ (roughly $50M) digital marketing budget at GAIN Credit and built GreatCall's first direct-to-consumer digital strategy, growing mobile users from 25,000 to over 1.5 million.

I started as a writer. Credits include Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender, a 20th Century Fox New Writers Award, a Nickelodeon Fellowship, and work as script consultant on the Oscar-winning film All Quiet on the Western Front. That instinct for narrative is still where I start.

Applied AI

I stood up Answer Engine Optimization as a growth channel before most agencies had a name for it, and I design, prototype and ship with AI tooling myself rather than just briefing it out. I mentor early-stage AI founders through Techstars, and as a strategic advisor to Steno.ai I identified the digital-cloning use case that landed Tony Robbins as the company's flagship customer.

FAQ

What does Aaron Amerling do?

Aaron Amerling is a marketing and product leader based in San Diego, California. He most recently served as Chief Marketing Officer at Etna Interactive, where he led a 60-person marketing organization. His work spans growth marketing, product marketing, organization design and applied AI, including answer engine optimization and generative engine optimization as live growth channels.

Does he take consulting or advisory work?

Yes. He takes a small number of fractional and advisory engagements at a time, covering brand strategy, go-to-market, demand generation and applied AI. Past advisory clients include GoFundMe, Steno.ai, TrendSource and American Medical Response.

What is answer engine optimization, and what has he actually done with it?

Answer engine optimization is the practice of getting a brand cited inside the synthesized answers that AI assistants return, rather than ranking in a list of links. The unit of competition, the content shape and the measurement model are all different from traditional search. Aaron built AEO and generative engine optimization into working growth channels at Etna Interactive ahead of the category, and rolled generative AI workflows across a marketing organization of sixty people.

What are his patents?

He is co-inventor on five U.S. patents covering a trust-network architecture. The work originated in emergency response call centers and was written broadly enough to cover authentication, identity verification and influence targeting. The patents were filed in 2016 and 2017 and are assigned to GreatCall, now Best Buy Health. They are not AI patents.

Has he managed large teams?

Yes. He led a 60-person marketing organization at Etna Interactive across paid, owned, earned, strategy and client services. At GAIN Credit he ran a team split across San Diego, London and Chennai that became the company's top-performing sales channel within six months. At GreatCall he managed direct reports plus fourteen agencies and vendors.

Has he worked on AI products, or only AI in marketing?

Both. As a strategic advisor to Steno.ai, a Techstars '23 AI digital twin company, he identified the use case for digital cloning in the expert and influencer markets and led the engagement that secured Tony Robbins as the flagship customer. He also mentors early-stage AI founders through the Techstars network, and launched AI consumer-facing products while Chief Marketing Officer at Etna Interactive.

What industries has he worked in?

Consumer electronics and health at Best Buy Health, fintech and lending at GAIN Credit, telecom and SaaS at Voxox, healthcare marketing at Etna Interactive, and gaming, entertainment and Web3 through agency work for Disney, Meta, Ubisoft, Square Enix and Dior.

Where is he based and does he work remotely?

San Diego, California. He works remotely and hybrid, and has run distributed teams across three continents.
